Japanese Recipes.

doggiecake

I thought this dish looked pretty tasty on first sight.Until I noticed the magazine it was in.

Patrick has been obsessed with dogs recently, busily researching the pet business in Tokyo before we get back to Hefei. He found the Tokyo Pet Club magazine in a store last week, and that is where I saw the cake above.

The magazine includes recipes for pampered pets.

I can understand cooking up some meat and veggies for pooch, but the cake above just looks too much effort.

Slow days

kitkat

I am enjoying a melon flavoured KitKat as I sit and think of something to post. I have never liked KitKats that much but was eventually lured into buying one by the ever-increasingly odd flavours they release here.I almost bought the cherry blossom KitKats in spring, just because of the pretty pink packaging, but resisted. I wasn’t tempted by the green tea flavour, or whatever it was after that, but the kiwi fruit and cantaloupe flavours broke me this evening.

Other than the KitKat, the day has not been so thrilling. The humidity here in Summer makes it difficult to get motivated to do much.

We realised a little too late that today is our 3.5 year wedding anniversary, and we should have booked our room at the Hyatt for today to celebrate. Instead we indulged in dinner from the convenience store in front of the computer. Very romantic. We might have to book for later in the week and just pretend it’s the 2nd again.

We at least managed to confirm and pay for our flight to Shanghai, so we didn’t entirely waste the day. We’ll be leaving on the 18th, little more than two weeks away.

We’re so excited about getting back to Hefei and seeing our new apartment that it’s a little difficult to focus on what we want to do here. Judging by how quickly the last six months has flown, we had better get ourselves sorted quickly before it’s time to leave.

I’m hoping we can take advantage of some of the foreigner-only package deals for domestic travel here, as the costs are half that of the packages for residents. It would be a pity to leave without having seen Kyoto.

toastWe still haven’t bothered to drag ourselves out of bed early to try breakfast at the cafe I discovered nearby recently, we are useless at early mornings. We did wander down to Pronto for brunch the other day, and I had maybe the oddest bit of toast I have ever seen.

As we sat and drank our juice and coffee to the soothing background of Jazz, I wondered who had thought to decorate each little piece of toast with monster-face shaped bacon bits… A cheerful and unexpected addition to my brunch.

Lazy, Lazy.

harajuku

I have been neglecting my blog a little recently. I’ll fill in the blanks at some point soon.I will have more time to write from now on, as I have become officially a housewife. No more work!

It was my last day Saturday and I am starting to feel just a little excited as I realise that, for the moment at least, my days of fitting into someone elses timetable are over.

Woo! Happy.

Today was my first Sunday off in Tokyo, so we walked down to Harajuku for a look around. We were lucky to come across the Tokyo Rockabillies, who are apparently not showing up as often as they used to.

I didn’t take too many photos of the various people posing in their weekend costumes, as I found it a little too zoo-like to be comfortable, but possibly I will get used to it soon and be able to get a few interesting shots.

I was a little taken aback by one fellow who appeared with his cat on his shoulder. A pretty little puss who seemed quite at home with all the attention she was attracting. Too, too cute.

Michael and I went for a walk in the evening and due to the lack of decent cafes in the general Shinjuku direction, ended up sitting at the counter of the Natural Lawson convenience store for a few hours with our little plastic bags of fruit salad and dessert.

Perfect start to my holiday if you ask me.

I miss…

tarlum

Generally there is not to much we miss in Tokyo, it has most things we could wish for.Patrick does often speak wistfully of his Sumo Breakfast he used to have every weekend in Richmond after training; Bacon, eggs, toast, tomatoes and who knows what else.

I miss nice cafes.

I am hoping to have found the answer for both our wishes in a cafe/restaurant not far from here, which I just accidentally discovered on line… cross your fingers for us! We are going to have a look tomorrow if we can bear the weather.

The image I stole from their website, Tarlum is the name, hope they have such lovely cakes tomorrow.

Square Melons

melon

The weather has been so horrid and humid this last week that I haven’t been at all inspired to go out and take photos or do anything interesting.Patrick and I were very excited to find yellow watermelons in the supermarket a little while ago, but apparently everyone else has already seen them, so thats not such big news.

I did see some more odd watermelons in The Japan Times a few days ago though.

Farmers have started growing square watermelons. I think it is done by putting the melons into square containers when they are young… Ha! Bet you haven’t tried one of those yet.

I couldn’t find the original article from the paper, but have stolen a pic from ananova.com.
