Practising Chinese Writing

FengI seem to have slowed to the China pace now, I think it’s a week since I wrote here.

We had dinner with Patrick’s coach and various other sports people this evening, and as the conversation drifted to sport, as it usually does, I think I began to stare listlessly at the wall.

The sports masseuse must have felt a bit sorry for me so decided then and there to fix the muscles in my neck and shoulders that suffer a little from all my computer use.

The pain! I think I will stop using the computer so much if that is what it takes to fix the damage it does. He is excellent at what he does though, and has been sent all over the world to fix various sports injuries, so I am looking forward to a healthy feeling neck once the pain subsides…

Patrick busily translated all the advice for me and then told me that he was also going to teach me to write Chinese. I was a little confused by the Chinese writing bit, but quite impressed this man was not only an expert at sports massage, but also a teacher of calligraphy.

Eventually I came to understand that the Chinese writing is imaginary writing I will do in the air with my forehead to exercise my neck. What fun exercise! Now I will not only learn Chinese characters, but also keep my neck healthy.

Think you would have noticed that I’m Chinese…

Eww learning Chinese writing wun be an easy task. English is difficult for its variety and inconsistency but at least there’s the alphabet and basic phonetic sounds… In Chinese, each character’s sound is not related to the way it looks… haha ten years of drilling all these into my head has been quite hellish.

But I’m sure you’ll find it mighty interesting, since you aren’t learning it for academic purposes… but for life. At most… you’ll have a very slender and flexible neck at the end of it all. :)

    Good luck with that!

Chinese ideograms are very beautiful. I’ve learnt it since I was a wee lass and still loving it. There are indeed a lot to learn especially in trying to differentiate the characters and the intonation. But the characters are like lego pieces. When you take it apart, you’ll find its peculiar origin and how little pieces can make up into one big word. Haha.

    You’ll love it :-)

    Hi Bobo,
It is really difficult to remember the characters, and to make sure every little stroke is right.
But you are right, I will at least have a slender neck soon. haha.

    Lisa Y,
Although I easily forget everything I learn, I agree the characters are so lovely to look at. I love reading about how the character came to be, so interesting, and really sweet at times! Thank-you for your encouragement! :)
