Asakusa for a day
Karen took us on a sightseeing trip in Asakusa today. We had a great time shopping, taking photos, and praying and eating, then finished it all off with a ferry ride. I was surprised to see the building that looks like it has a poo on it, for some reason I had thought that was in Roppongi, but here it was. A nice surprise.
The market was filled with souvenirs and bits an pieces, so now I know where to go to get a buying-little-cute-things fix.
I have also been surprised at the lack of souvenir type shops around Tokyo, I hadn’t come across any at all until we visited the market today. Today was also the first time I have seen a postcard for sale, we couldn’t even find any in the post office when we went.
There was also a shop that sold whale meat. It came in little tins like tuna, or in a box of instant curry, or fresh from the counter. There was also a poster in the store that showed all the different types of whale, like the fish posters they have in fish and chip stores at home.
Weird.
We went and prayed at the Sensoji Temple, then collected our fortunes from the temple. Mine was not so bad, a “Good Fortune in Future” it predicted, and generally seemed quite positive. Patrick’s, of course, was excellent and more specific about what a golden boy he is and what luck will be showering down on him in the future.
As long as I stick with him I should be fine….
We had another fantastic lunch at a Korean place near the market, called Tokori. We ate in a lovely private low-table style tatami room, and each had an enormous lunch set plus a few extras. Again the lunch was surprisingly cheap, under $60 for three of us to have spent about an hour eating - a lot.
The service was excellent ~ and the Bathrooms were even better! Everything in there was automatic… the light switches on as you enter and the toilet lid opens. The seat is warmed and when business is finished the toilet automatically flushes. They even have little packages of toothbrushes and toothpaste to clean your teeth after the meal. Great!
We finished off the day with a ferry ride back to Central Tokyo, which wasn’t long enough, there were too many interesting things to see.
