Square Melons

melon

The weather has been so horrid and humid this last week that I haven’t been at all inspired to go out and take photos or do anything interesting.Patrick and I were very excited to find yellow watermelons in the supermarket a little while ago, but apparently everyone else has already seen them, so thats not such big news.

I did see some more odd watermelons in The Japan Times a few days ago though.

Farmers have started growing square watermelons. I think it is done by putting the melons into square containers when they are young… Ha! Bet you haven’t tried one of those yet.

I couldn’t find the original article from the paper, but have stolen a pic from ananova.com.

I’m so used to seeing a round watermelon, that one looks odd! But it’s easier to cut it since it won’t roll over:)

Actually this is nothing new. I first heard about Japanese growing square watermelons back in 1999 (I think it was). The reasion they grow ‘em square is out of practicality - they’re easier to store, easier to cut, and since they’re square they take up less space in the average-sized japanese fridge (which I’ve been told are usually very small).

Hi Nessa, it doesn’t look quite right, does it!!

Rebenga, if my fridge is anything to go by, I think Japanese fridges are tiny! It would definitely be easier to cut too. I am suprised these haven’t really taken off!

You’re right Sophiagurl, all sorts of really strange things to be found!

It is really odd, but pretty! Though I don’t think such a watermelon would taste as good as ordinary ones, you see, like the example of the yellow ones. Cute enough, anyway, hehe!

I wonder where these come from? I’ll tell you: Kagawa :) And they aren’t grown to be eaten.

Moreover, I’m sure they’re not grown in boxes so that they’re easier to store. A journalist friend who interviewed the company that grows them, explained that most of them are sold simply as decoration pieces–they can last for months because they are harvested well before they are ripe.

I enjoying reading your posts Sally. I’ll try to get you some more subscribers!

Oh, and I promise that next time I’ll try to write a comment without “Kagawa” in it ;)

Another Oh: I just realised that the journalist friend I mentioned above wrote that article in the Japan Times–I’ll ask her to dig it out. I’ll ask her to comment here too. Small world ne!
