But it's easier to cut it since it won't roll over:) I’m so used to seeing a round watermelon, that one looks odd! But it’s easier to cut it since it won’t roll over:)

I first heard about Japanese growing square watermelons back in 1999 (I think it was). The reasion they grow 'em square is out of practicality - they're easier to store, easier to cut, and since they're square they take up less space in the average-sized japanese fridge (which I've been told are usually very small). Rebenga, if my fridge is anything to go by, I think Japanese fridges are tiny! It would definitely be easier to cut too. I am suprised these haven't really taken off! Though I don't think such a watermelon would taste as good as ordinary ones, you see, like the example of the yellow ones. Cute enough, anyway, hehe! It is really odd, but pretty! I'll tell you: Kagawa :) And they aren't grown to be eaten. Moreover, I'm sure they're not grown in boxes so that they're easier to store. A journalist friend who interviewed the company that grows them, explained that most of them are sold simply as decoration pieces--they can last for months because they are harvested well before they are ripe. I enjoying reading your posts Sally. I'll try to get you some more subscribers! Oh, and I promise that next time I'll try to write a comment without "Kagawa" in it ;) Another Oh: I just realised that the journalist friend I mentioned above wrote that article in the Japan Times--I'll ask her to dig it out. I'll ask her to comment here too. Small world ne! I wonder where these come from? I’ll tell you: Kagawa :) And they aren’t grown to be eaten.
